Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has claimed that the overwhelming popularity of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi’s “Vote Adhikar Yatra” compelled Union Home Minister Amit Shah to introduce a new law enabling the removal of any minister from office if imprisoned for more than 30 days.
In a post on his ‘X’ handle, the senior Congress leader said: “What was the sudden need for enacting this new law? As Rahul Gandhi Ji embarked on the Vote Adhikar Yatra, it received an enormous response from the masses, especially in Bihar, where people thronged the route. This is why Shah suddenly introduced the new law.”

Gehlot further questioned: “Will somebody ask the Home Minister what compelled him to make this move? How many leaders in the country had refused to resign despite imprisonment? The then Tamil Nadu CM J. Jayalalithaa, Bihar CM Lalu Prasad Yadav, and Jharkhand CM all stepped down. Only Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal did not resign, perhaps sensing the vulnerability of his party’s fate. Was this single instance enough to warrant a special law?”
He added that such a move is creating widespread apprehension in the political arena. “The pressure tactics of ED, CBI, and Income Tax sleuths have already become a big issue. Now, with this new law, anyone could be framed in a case, and since bail is not always easy to secure, the law could be misused to remove individuals arbitrarily,” Gehlot alleged.
